Overview of the Wine
Historical Context and Winemaking On April 25, 1974, a military coup ended the long-standing dictatorship in Portugal. Amidst the ensuing social and political upheaval, the decision was made not to bottle the Vintage Port that year. Despite this, the exceptional quality of the wines led to their selection for extended cask aging. This vintage marked Peter Symington’s fifth year in the Douro, initiating his role as head winemaker, taster, and blender—a responsibility he later handed down to his son, Charles.
Harvest Insights In 1974, port producers were initially apprehensive due to the uncertain political and economic climate. However, Michael Symington’s harvest notes from October 1974 reflect a peaceful atmosphere, significantly enhancing the vintage’s enjoyment. He praised it as one of the finest vintages in recent years.
Provenance and Selection The grapes for Graham’s 1974 Single Harvest Tawny mainly came from field blends in the Malvedos vineyard. Nearly fifty years later, Charles selected the best casks for bottling, ensuring the wine reached us in superb condition.
Storage and Serving Suggestions Graham’s 1974 Single Harvest pairs excellently with creamy or nutty desserts or stands alone as a dessert wine. For optimal taste, serve it chilled and consume within 6-8 weeks of opening.
Tasting Notes The wine features a coppery center with a pale bronze edge. It exudes aromas of sultanas, quince preserve, caramel, vanilla, and ginger. The palate is silky and lively, with soft tannins that enhance its structure and vitality. A long finish offers flavors of peppery spice, tea leaf, and thyme.
