Teaninich Distillery

eaninich Distillery, established in 1817 by Captain Hugh Munro, is located in Alness, Ross-shire, in the Highland region of Scotland. It is one of the earliest legal distilleries in Scotland and has a long history of innovations and expansions. In 2000, the distillery introduced a rare hammer mill and mash filter system, which produces a clear wort that contributes to the whisky’s unique character. Teaninich is known for its fragrant, grassy notes that evoke images of Japanese green tea and bison grass.

Primarily, Teaninich produces malt whisky for blending, supplying major brands like Johnnie Walker. However, it also offers limited editions of single malts, such as the 10-Year-Old available in Diageo’s Flora and Fauna series. The distillery operates 12 stills and uses water from the Dairy Well Spring. The production process includes a lengthy fermentation period of 76 to 80 hours, which is crucial for developing the whisky’s distinctive flavors. Teaninich’s whisky features exotic grassy flavors, combined with an oily texture and sharp acidity.

With a production capacity of 10.2 million liters annually, Teaninich plans to expand its facilities further. Despite focusing on blend production, the distillery’s single malts have garnered attention from enthusiasts and independent bottlers. Teaninich’s commitment to traditional methods and innovative practices makes it a significant player in the Highland whisky landscape.
