Talisker Distillery
Talisker Distillery, established in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, is located in Carbost on the Isle of Skye. It stands as the oldest working distillery on the island. The distillery’s unique coastal location and traditional production methods give Talisker whisky its distinctive maritime character, marked by a salty-peppery profile.
The distillery uses water from nearby underground springs and features five copper pot stills, including two wash stills and three spirit stills. These stills, along with worm tub condensers, contribute to the whisky’s complexity. Talisker’s malting floors were closed in 1972, and since then, they have sourced their malt from Glen Ord Maltings. Talisker’s fermentation process lasts a minimum of 65 hours, enhancing the depth of flavors in their whiskies.
Talisker produces a range of expressions, including the well-known Talisker 10-Year-Old, which is part of Diageo’s Classic Malts collection. Other notable expressions include Talisker Storm, Talisker Skye, and the Talisker Distiller’s Edition, which has won numerous awards. The distillery also offers a comprehensive visitor experience with tours that showcase the whisky-making process from mashing to maturation.
