Stauning Distillery

Stauning Distillery, located in a small village on Denmark’s west coast, was founded in 2005 by nine friends from diverse backgrounds, including a doctor, a chef, and several engineers. They aimed to create high-quality Danish whisky that rivals the finest in the world. The founders use local resources and traditional methods, which have become hallmarks of Stauning’s production process.

The distillery sources all its barley and rye locally, and the grains are floor malted on-site. This method activates enzymes within the grain, converting starches into fermentable sugars. The custom-built malt-turning machine, designed by the founders, handles this process. Using Danish peat and heather for smoking ensures Stauning’s whisky reflects the unique terroir of its surroundings.

Stauning produces a range of whiskies, including its flagship Rye, double-distilled in small, direct-fired copper pot stills and aged in virgin American oak barrels. Other expressions include Stauning KAOS, a triple malt blend, and Stauning Smoke, which is heather-smoked for a unique aroma. The distillery’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship and innovative engineering has earned it numerous awards and recognition in the whisky world.
