Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Royal Lochnagar Distillery, founded in 1845 by John Begg, is located near Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands. Its proximity to the royal residence led to a visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848, granting the distillery its “Royal” prefix. This historic event marked the start of its royal association, which continues to this day.

The distillery operates with two copper pot stills and uses traditional methods like open mash tuns and worm tub condensers to produce its whisky. These methods contribute to the whisky’s complex flavors, characterized by delicate fruit notes, a hint of dry grass, and mid-palate depth. The distillation process maximizes copper contact, resulting in a refined and aromatic new make spirit. Royal Lochnagar predominantly ages its whisky in ex-sherry casks, which adds richness and depth to its expressions.

The distillery’s flagship product is the Royal Lochnagar 12-Year-Old, known for its balanced and smooth profile. It also plays a significant role in premium blends like Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Visitors to the distillery can enjoy guided tours and tastings, exploring the traditional production methods and unique heritage of Royal Lochnagar.
