Oban Distillery
Established in 1794 by John and Hugh Stevenson, Oban Distillery is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries. Nestled in the coastal town of Oban, it remains one of the few urban distilleries in the country. The distillery’s maritime location between the sea and the mountains significantly influences the character of its whiskies, adding briny undertones that set them apart from inland counterparts.
Oban Distillery operates with two small pot stills, making it one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. This compact setup contributes to its distinctive “West Highland” flavor profile, which balances the smoky, robust qualities of island whiskies with the lighter, sweeter notes typical of Highland malts. The 14-Year-Old expression, part of Diageo’s Classic Malts Selection, features flavors of orange peel, smoke, sea salt, and honey, embodying the essence of Oban’s craftsmanship.
The distillery employs traditional production methods, including a slow, five-day fermentation process that enhances the malted barley’s rich flavors. The use of worm tubs for cooling the spirit further contributes to its unique taste. Oban’s whiskies are matured in a mix of American and European oak casks, which add layers of complexity. In addition to the 14-Year-Old, Oban’s range includes an 18-Year-Old and special limited editions like the Distiller’s Edition, showcasing the meticulous aging process and the coastal environment’s influence.
