Laphroaig Distillery

Laphroaig Distillery, located on Islay’s southern coast, is famous for its peaty single malt whiskies. Established in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig means “the beautiful hollow by the broad bay” in Gaelic. This picturesque location and the island’s harsh climate contribute to the whisky’s unique flavors.

The distillery uses traditional methods perfected over centuries. They floor-malt their barley and dry it over peat fires, utilizing water from the Kilbride Stream. These processes, combined with aging in ex-bourbon and sherry casks, create Laphroaig’s signature smoky, iodine-rich character. Notably, the 10-year-old single malt is renowned for its intense peat smoke, seaweed, and medicinal flavors.

Visitors can explore Laphroaig’s history and whisky-making process through guided tours, including tastings of various expressions. The distillery also offers the “Friends of Laphroaig” program, where members can own a square foot of Islay land and receive annual rent in the form of a miniature bottle of whisky. This program helps preserve the distillery’s heritage and land.
