Lagavulin Distillery

Lagavulin Distillery, located on the southern coast of Islay, Scotland, is famous for its intensely smoky single malt whiskies. Established in 1816, the distillery has a rich history with roots in illicit distillation dating back to 1742. The name Lagavulin comes from the Gaelic “Lag a’ Mhuilin,” meaning “hollow by the mill,” reflecting its picturesque location.

The whisky production at Lagavulin is known for its slow distillation process, the slowest among Islay distilleries. This method helps retain the phenolic compounds that contribute to its signature peat smoke flavor. The distillery uses pear-shaped stills and matures its whisky predominantly in ex-bourbon and sherry casks. These casks are exposed to the maritime environment, which imparts distinctive iodine and seaweed notes to the whisky.

Lagavulin’s flagship 16-year-old single malt is celebrated for its deep, rich flavors of peat smoke, sea salt, and dried fruits. The distillery also produces special editions like the 12-year-old cask strength and the Distiller’s Edition finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Lagavulin’s visitor center, housed in a historic building, offers a variety of tours and tastings, making it a must-visit for whisky enthusiasts.
