Glengyle Distillery
William Mitchell founded Glengyle Distillery in 1872 in Campbeltown. The Mitchell family, known for their significant influence in the whisky industry, had previously established Springbank and Riechlachan distilleries. Glengyle operated successfully until 1925, when economic difficulties forced its closure.
After decades of disuse, J&A Mitchell, owners of Springbank, purchased the distillery in 2000. They began extensive renovations, and by 2004, Glengyle was producing whisky again. However, due to trademark issues, the whisky is marketed under the brand name Kilkerran, derived from the original name of Campbeltown, Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain.
Glengyle uses traditional production methods, including a semi-lauter mash tun and fermentation in wooden washbacks. The distillation process involves copper stills sourced from the defunct Ben Wyvis Distillery. Glengyle’s production capacity is 170,000 liters annually, although it typically operates below this level.
The core range of Kilkerran whiskies includes the 12-year-old expression, matured in 70% ex-bourbon casks and 30% ex-sherry casks. This results in a slightly smoky profile with notes of lemon, vanilla, honey, and butterscotch. The distillery also produces special releases and experimental batches, showcasing a variety of cask finishes and distillation techniques.
