Glenglassaugh Distillery
James Moir founded Glenglassaugh Distillery in 1875 near Portsoy, Banffshire. Known for its coastal influence, the distillery stands at the edge of Sandend Bay. Initially, production was inconsistent due to market fluctuations, with significant closures from 1907 to 1960 and again from 1986 to 2008.
In 1960, Highland Distillers completely rebuilt the distillery, modernizing its facilities. However, oversupply issues in the 1980s led to another closure in 1986. The Scaent Group revived it in 2008, investing £5 million in restoration. BenRiach Distillery Company acquired Glenglassaugh in 2013, followed by Brown-Forman in 2016.
Glenglassaugh produces both unpeated and peated whiskies, using traditional methods like copper stills and indirect steam heating. The distillery’s capacity is 1 million liters annually, with water sourced from nearby springs. Its core range includes Glenglassaugh Revival, Evolution, and Torfa, highlighting its unique character and coastal notes.
