Caol Ila Distillery
Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, Caol Ila Distillery is situated on the northeastern shores of Islay. It offers magnificent views across the Sound of Islay to the Paps of Jura. Known for its lighter Islay whiskies, Caol Ila produces single malts that balance peat smoke with fresh and maritime notes. The distillery sources its water from Loch Nam Ban, which contributes to the high mineral content in the whisky.
Caol Ila’s core expression, the 12 Year Old, features citrus, peat, and maritime flavors, with a distinctive freshness that sets it apart from other Islay whiskies. The distillery uses tall stills, which help to create a lighter spirit by reducing the peatiness. Most of Caol Ila’s whisky is aged off the island and is heavily used in blends like Johnnie Walker.
