Bunnahabhain Distillery
Founded in 1881, Bunnahabhain Distillery is located on the northeastern coast of Islay, near Port Askaig. The distillery uses pure spring water from the Margadale River, contributing to the light character of its whiskies. Unlike many Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhain focuses on unpeated single malts, though it also produces peated varieties like the Mòine range.
The distillery’s core expressions include the 12 Year Old, with sherry, dried fruit, and sea salt notes, and the 18 Year Old, known for its rich, nutty flavors. Bunnahabhain uses traditional methods, including the largest mash tun in Scotland and the tallest stills on Islay. These help create its distinctive, delicate spirit. The whisky matures in coastal warehouses, where the sea air adds unique maritime qualities.
