Whisky à la Belge
Whisky à la Belge is a unique Belgian whisky project that combines traditional Scottish whisky with a Belgian twist. The initiative was created by Jori Aerden, Ken Van Eesbeek, and Tom Van Gyseghem, who sought to craft a distinctive whisky that integrates elements of Belgian beer culture.
Key Features
1. Belgian Influence: The defining feature of Whisky à la Belge is its use of Belgian beer barrels for finishing the whisky. This practice imparts unique flavors and characteristics to the whisky, differentiating it from traditional Scotch whiskies.
2. Collaboration with Cantillon Brewery: The project initially collaborated with the renowned Cantillon Brewery. For example, their first release, “Arran à la Belge,” involved finishing a single malt Scotch whisky from Arran in a Cantillon Kriek barrel, a type of Belgian beer cask that had been used to macerate sour cherries in lambic beer. This innovative approach resulted in a whisky with distinct cherry and beer influences.
3. Subsequent Releases: Following the success of their initial release, Whisky à la Belge continued with other unique expressions:
- Glen Moray à la Belge: This release also used Cantillon Kriek barrels, enhancing the whisky with complex fruit and beer notes.
- Ardmore à la Belge: The latest edition, launched in November 2022, involves finishing Ardmore whisky in a Russian Imperial Stout cask from Het Nest Brewery, adding deep, stout-like flavors to the whisky.
4. Challenges and Innovations: The project faced regulatory challenges from the Scottish Whisky Association (SWA) regarding the use of certain casks. However, through negotiations, they managed to release their products under the Scotch label for the last time. This determination highlights their commitment to innovation within the confines of traditional whisky regulations.
5. Distribution: Whisky à la Belge products are exclusively available through the Thistle Spirits shop, ensuring that the whisky remains a niche and sought-after product for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
