Springbank Distillers Environmental Initiative
Immediate Changes to Packaging
Springbank Distillery is taking significant steps to address environmental concerns by revising their packaging and operational processes. Starting this week, they will ship their core range single malts—Springbank 10, 12, 15, Longrow Peated, and Hazelburn 10yo—along with Kilkerran Single Malts from Glengyle, without external packaging like cardboard boxes or tubes. This change directly responds to the global climate emergency.
Shift in Packaging Strategy
Initially, the distillery planned to use cardboard tubes for packaging. However, they chose a different path after evaluating the impact of climate change and insights from the COP26 event in Glasgow. Consequently, Ranald Watson, Director of Sales and Marketing, committed to reducing packaging across their brands, including Springbank, Kilkerran, and William Cadenhead Ltd. Therefore, these whiskies will now appear ‘naked’ on shelves, marking them as pioneers in the industry.
Future Plans for Sustainable Practices
Additionally, Watson announced plans to reassess the packaging for their rare and exclusive whiskies. They aim to source any necessary exterior packaging locally and use sustainable materials. Although they cannot implement these changes immediately due to supply chain constraints, they are dedicated to making these adjustments as soon as possible.
Kilkerran’s Recent Bottling
In 2021, Kilkerran bottled a whisky matured in Bourbon and Sherry casks (85% vs 15%). It was bottled at a strength of 57.7%.
